Research Assistantship

Domestic Students

If you are Domestic Student (i.e. you are Canadian, have Permenant Residency, or have applied and received your Permenant Residency number) then research opportunities have the potential to come with a Teaching Assistantship (TA), a Research Assistantship (RA), and Scholarships (internal and external) - these come as a package and typically easily cover the cost of your tuition fees.

Potential Scholarships

The following is a list of scholarships are available on a year-by-year basis (i.e. you need to apply), but are generally given only to Domestic Students; these scholarships are generally awarded based on CGPA:

  • NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship (PGS), Apply in Fall - Awarded in Winter
  • Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), Apply in Fall - Awarded in Winter

International Students

If you are an International Student (i.e. not Canadian, do not have Permanent Residency, and have not applied) then research opportunities are the same, but funding is different. International Master's students typically will need to get a funded project from me, no teaching assistantship is given, and scholarships are limited (to non-existent). International PhD students will typically be given a Teaching Assistantship, there are some scholarships available (internal only), and funding depends on the project (and your CGPA).

International students are limited to working only 20Hrs / Week to earn money based on a work permit/student permit and salaries typically range from $15/hr (minimum) to around $25/hr (average) [$4.5K/term - $8K/term] - students needing to work are doing so independent of the Professor...

Funding (Domestic/International)

TAs are generally given, but only when the application is early enough in the process. Some projects are not funded, so either you are funded and following the requirements of the project or you are not and you have more flexibility on topic. Generally, if you are planning to do 6 terms (2 years), you managed to get a TA for each term (Fall/Winter), and you have a high grade average, you would still need to fund .53 out of your own expenses; and this obviously doesn't give you money to live on or rent.

  • Teaching Assistantship: CAD$5K / Term (2 terms / year, not guaranteed - but generally given for domestic students and International PhD students)
  • Research Assistantship: CAD$6K - $14K / Year (partial funding based on term, only given on terms you are registered, your grade average generally dictates your funding)

Costs/Funding

International Students - Master's

These are some typical costs/funding to give you a rough idea; they do not represent exact figures or promises:

Expenses

  • Tuition Fees (Fall/Winter terms): ~$18,000.00 - depending on program
  • Tuition Fees (Summer terms): ~$9,000.00 - you do not need to be here for courses in the summer, but you need to register to defend
  • Apartment Rental & Living Expenses: ~$1000.00 / Month (this is really difficult to estimate, and depends where/how you live)
