Best Poster Runner-up Award Our poster titled "The Impact of Dynamic Learning on Adversarial Attacks in Networks" has been awarded the best poster runner-up award at the 2023 IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security (CNS), co-authored with my Ph.D student Mohamed El Shehaby.
March 2022 Carleton University Research Award for 2022. Award is a $15,000.
2021 IEEE Award Dr. Matrawy is the recipient of the 2021 IEEE Ottawa Section Outstanding Engineering Educator Award as a recognition "for outstanding contributions to engineering research and education, and more specifically in the field of computer and network security." at the 77th Annual IEEE Ottawa Section AGM, Novermber 26, 2021.

Best Paper Award Our paper titled "Proactive and Dynamic Slice Allocation in Sliced 5G Core Networks" has been awarded the best paper at the 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Networks, Computers and Communications (ISNCC 2020) Conference, October 2020, co-authored with my Ph.D student Danish Sattar. Our paper is the best among 184 accepted papers.
Congratulations Danish Sattar for successfully defending his PhD thesis. Danish was working on DDoS mitigation in virtualized networks with emphasis on network slicing. Find Danish's papers on the NGN publications page.

February 2019 Invited to give a seminar on Enabling IoT Services Through Secure 5G Core Slices. The seminar was hosted by the Montreal Chapter of the IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society and was given at the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering (CIISE).
October 2018 Participated in the ITAC Cyber Security Technology Summit as invited penlist on security training and education and how to address the shortage in security professionals in industry and government.
October 2018 Moderated the Panel on Security Education at the ACM CCS (Computer and Communications Security) in Toronto. Video of the panel will be posted when available.
July 2018 I have had an excellent experience during my sabbatical that just ended. I spent most of it working as a System Analyst with TELUS COMMUNICATIONS in the Technology Strategy Group. I worked on large-scale network management analytics. I created proof-of-concept log processing modules and worked closely with a large implementation and network operation team to test the suitability of unsupervised machine learning for large-scale log analytics.
July 2018 Promoted to Full Professor starting July 1st.

January 2016 Our work on SDN has just been published in IEEE Communications Letters . As SDN is becoming a very hot topic, we address the critical issue of how a controller's method of network state collection impacts SDN applications performance. Both presentations were hosted by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society joint Chapter of the Vancouver/Victoria Sections .

September 2013: My graduate advanced topics course is updated and offered now as a regular course. The "Designing Secure Networking and Computer Systems" course is now a regular The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Electrical and Computer Engineering (OCIECE) course (SYSC5500).

October 2012: Our paper titled "Does Context Influence Responses to Firewall Warnings?" won the third place award for best paper in the seventh IEEE eCrime Researchers Summit 2012 organized by the Anti Phishing Working Group in Puerto Rico. The paper is co-authored with my student M. Mahmoud and Prof. S. Chiasson
July 2011: I finished my first sabbatical at the end of June. It was a very good experience. I was fortunate enough to gain world class research experience at two places. The first experience was spending part of my sabbatical working as a senior research and consultant at Cloakware Advanced Research Centre (CARC) of Irdeto. We co-authored a paper on cloud computing security. The second was collaborating with Prof. Hossam Hassanein at his TRLab at Queen's University on problems related to peer-to-peer applications in new networking paradigms.
