3D Virtual Learning Environments - Post-Doctoral Research Fellow


Rob Teather (Associate Professor & Director) and Jaisie Sin (Assistant Professor) at the Carleton University School of Information Technology are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (PDF). The PDF will perform research primarily on addressing learner assessment, engagement, and accessibility in XR environments.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in a large and well-equipped multi-disciplinary research group, working with and helping to advise grad and undergrad students. The PDF is also expected to present and publish research results in highly-ranked premier international conferences and journals in human-computer interaction, virtual reality, and accessibility.

Applicants should have a PhD in computer science or a similar field, and demonstrated experience in interactive VR/AR/XR system development, preferably with a background in educational technologies and/or artificial intelligence (AI). Salary is ~$50K CAD + benefits, with opportunities for additional paid teaching positions in digital media and related courses. The position is for an initial 1-year term, with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with the team leaders to perform and oversee various research tasks in the first phase, and managing/advising students involved with the project.
  • (1) Extending existing literature review, (2) designing the base learning experience for a prototype, (3) initial design of the learner assessment methods, (4) initial design of an AI model to support the project, (5) initial design of accessibility mechanisms, and (6) initial design of emotional engagement and reflective perspective change.
  • Writing and submitting ethics applications as needed.
  • Writing, submitting, and presenting at academic conferences and knowledge translation activities.
  • Contribute to the development of grant applications and other funding opportunities.
