Awards and Support

You don't have to go into debt to study at the graduate level! There are many opportunities for funding your graduate work at the Carleton School of IT, whether you are a domestic or international student, studying at Masters or PhD level. These are just a few. See https://www.scholarshipscanada.com/ to see more available scholarships that might be suitable for your application.

Please note that not all of these are available to all students—please see the links provided for further information on whether or not you may be eligible.

Graduate programs at CSIT offer generous financial support packages. For domestic students in thesis programs, financial support exists in the form of scholarships (largely based on GPA), teaching assistantships (TA), and research assistantships (provided by the research supervisor, depending on availability of project funding). Depending on GPA and research funding available, it is typical to make about 15-25K per year through these avenues, although more is possible too depending on the degree level or if you have external funding (e.g. scholarships, awards).

Domestic students in the course-based networking program may receive financial assistance in the form of scholarship (based on GPA mainly) and a teaching assistantship (TA).

International students may receive research assistantships from the research supervisor, and depending on GPA and availability of funds, may also receive a teaching assistantship. International doctoral students may also qualify for the Carleton International Doctoral Tuition Support.

Funding is also available in the form of teaching/research assistantships and scholarships based on academic excellence. We encourage students to apply for awards such as: the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Scholarships.

Travel Bursary

We provide some funds to graduate students who require assistance to conduct or present their research. The fund may cover a portion of the cost related to field travel and supplies, long-distance telephone charges, questionnaire publication, translation, mailing, and the cost of copying journal articles. It may also cover costs related to attend a scholarly conference at which the graduate student is presenting a paper. Historically, the School has provided up to $300-500CAD to offset conference participation costs through this award.

Applications are considered on a case-by-case and first-come-first served basis. Students are restricted to one application and one conference per academic year (May-April). However, if funds are available, a second application may be considered within the same academic year.

Electronic Application forms must be submitted to the School at least one month in advance of the expected travel activity.

See Carleton Specific Awards > Graduate Student Travel/Research Bursary for more information
