Meet CSIT’s New Faculty Member: Dr. Hmaza Bashandy

November 14th, 2023

We're excited to announce the latest addition to Carleton School of Information Technology (CSIT): Dr. Hamza Bashandy, an accomplished architect and game designer.

Currently exploring the datafication of crowd behavior, his research focuses on agent-based modeling and crowd simulation in video games, particularly in political protest settings.

As a visiting researcher at Concordia University's TAG Research Centre, he crafted the game "Return to Sender." At the Liège Game Lab, Belgium, he consulted on bridging video games and urban design through participatory and educational partnerships.

Dr. Bashandy, a recipient of the Civil Society Scholar Award (2021), has publications like "Playing, Mapping, and Power" (American Journal of Play, 2021) and "Videogames and Protest" (Géographie et Culture, 2019).

His political project challenges Eurocentric theories in video games, aiming to assess code's impact on generating democratic spatiality and altering the politics of the body in the game space.

At CSIT, Dr. Bashandy is dedicated to advancing digital tools in city-making, and sharing knowledge and resources with equity-deserving communities.

Join us in welcoming Dr. Hamza Bashandy to CSIT and anticipating his innovative contributions!
