Dr. Robert Teather Receives Faculty of Engineering & Design Research Achievement Award

CSIT is proud to announce that Dr. Robert Teather has been awarded the Faculty of Engineering and Design's Research Achievement Award (FED RAA) for his groundbreaking work in improving interaction with virtual reality (VR) systems. Through the award, Dr. Teather, alongside PhD student Kristen Grinyer, will conduct a new project aimed at democratizing access to immersive virtual experiences, particularly for individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

Dr. Robert Teather and Dr. Victoria McArthur have been awarded funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation's John R. Evans Leaders Fund (CFI-JELF) for MARVEL - the Mixed and Augmented Reality and Virtual Environments Lab.

MARVEL is equipped with state-of-the-art high-fidelity XR head-mounted displays (HMDs) and tracking systems, enabling cutting-edge research. Their goal? To make XR accessible to all by developing cost-effective, user-friendly XR platforms.

Dr. Ali Arya Named a Recipient of The 2023 OCUFA Award

Dr. Ali Arya has been named a recipient of the 2023 Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations (OCUFA) Teaching Award – the highest honour an educator can receive in the province.

Dr. Arya incorporates technology into many of his teaching and learning innovations at Carleton, including the use of VR and 3D environments, gamification and game-based learning, and an exploration-based pedagogy using emergent technologies. Arya has also innovated by incorporating various methods of student engagement such as reflective activities into his educational practice in STEM disciplines and has significantly contributed to the curriculum as the Associate Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Information Technology.

Introducing our exceptional postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Karen Cochrane, and our brilliant Ph.D. graduate, Dr. Sam Qorbani.

We are thrilled to share that Karen has secured a prestigious faculty position at the Stratford School of Business and Design at the University of Waterloo, where she will continue her impactful research in HCI.

Sam is joining MacEwan University as an associate professor. Sam is thrilled to continue working on advancing VR research alongside Dr. Ali Arya.

We are very proud of their achievements and wish them great success as they go about shaping HCI and VR landscapes.
